4th - 8th Grade In-House Rules
Equipment
1) Boys
and Girls teams will play on 10 foot baskets
2) Girls
4th- 8th grade and boys 4th- 6th
grade will use 28.5” basketballs, boys 7th & 8th will
use 29.5” basketballs
3) No
jewelry/watches allowed on the players
Timekeeping/Scorekeeping
4) Games
must start within 10 minutes of the scheduled time for each game
5) Games
will consist of 8 five-minute running time periods with 1 minute between
periods and 3 minutes for half-time
6) Stop
time during the last 2 minutes of the 4th and 8th periods, no stop time if the
lead is 25 points or greater
7) Overtime
- play 2 minutes stop time for 1 overtime period. If still tied, play sudden
death and first point wins the game
8) Home team
(1st team in pairing) will provide parents to run the clock/scoreboard and keep the
official score book
9) The
winning team must communicate the scores each weekend in the website
Structure
10) All
games will be played 5 on 5
11) Jump
ball to start games. Alternate possessions at quarters and tie-ups
12) Substituting
can be done only at the beginning of a period
13) The 3
point shot will be in effect
Violations
14) Teams
have 10 seconds to bring the ball up court past the half court line
15) Over
and back violations will be enforced
16) Traveling
will be enforced
17) 3
second in the lane will be enforced
18) Palming
& carrying the basketball will be enforced
19) Double
dribble will be enforced
20) Using
any part of the body to displace or impede
is a foul, this includes:
a. Hand checking a moving player
b. Moving
Screens
c. Charging
d. Blocking
e. “Backing
down” by offensive post player – if the defensive player is displaced it is a
foul
Defense
and Pressing
21) Mandatory
man to man (person to person) defense only
22) Double
teaming is only allowed inside the lane.
23) Note,
for 4th grade girls, no pressing will be allowed at any time. Defense are to
pickup their players at the three point line.
24) For 5th
& 6th grade girls and 4th – 6th grade
boys, pressing is allowed only if a team is behind
25) For 7th
and 8th grade girls and boys teams may full court press at any time,
unless they are ahead by 10 points or more
NOTE - One warning will be
given for any defense violation followed by a technical foul for each subsequent
violation. Unintentional violation will result in the stoppage of play and
return the ball to the offended team.
Timeouts
26) Each
team is allowed 4 - one minute time outs
27) Teams
get 1 - one minute time out during the overtime period and the sudden death
period, time outs do not carry over from regulation
28) A coach may call time out only if their team
has possession of the ball
29) If a
team unintentionally calls a timeout when they have none left, the other team
will get to shoot one free throw and then get possession of the ball. A second
occurrence will be treated as a regular technical
Fouls
30) Each
player is allowed 5 fouls. The player is out for the rest of the game on the
5th foul
31) All
shooting fouls will be attempted from the free-throw line
32) Intentional
fouls will result in one shot plus the ball
33) A
technical foul will be an automatic 3 points and possession of the ball. A
second technical foul on an individual during the game will result in a forfeit
of the game and a 1 game suspension for the individual, coach or parent
34) For
7th/8th grade girls and boys bonus free throws (1-on-1) are awarded on the
seventh team foul. Double bonus free throws (automatic 2 shots) are awarded on
the tenth team foul. The team foul count will start over again at the beginning
of the new half or overtime period.
Sportsmanship
35) Equal
playing time for all kids. Each player should play at least 2 quarters in all
games including tournaments. Play to win, but the kids play equal time. If 11
players, then 7 play 4 periods and 4 play 3 periods, 10 players - 10 play 4
periods, 9 players - 4 play 5 periods and 5 play 4 periods, 8 players - 8 play
5 periods, 7 players - 5 play 6 periods and 2 play 5 periods, 6 players - 4
play 7 periods and 2 play 6 periods, 5 players - 5 play 8 periods
36) Scoring
when a team has a 25 point lead will be discouraged.
a. On
defense, a team with a 25 point lead should continue to aggressively develop
footwork and rebounding fundamentals but may not steal passes or steal off the
dribble. If the ball is stolen by a team with a 25 point lead it will be returned
to the offensive team.
b. On
offense, a team with a 25 point lead should continue to develop passing skills
and moving without the basketball. Teams with a 25 point lead may not fast
break. If a team with a 25 point lead does fast break the ball will be returned
to the other team.
