Chaska Youth Basketball
3rd Grade In-House Rules
2007
Practice Sessions
1. Time should be spent working on the fundamentals:

  • Ball-handling, Dribbling
  • Passing (chest pass, bounce pass, over the head pass)
  • Shooting (right-hand and left-hand layups, jump shots)
  • Defense (positioning, footwork)
  • Rebounding (positioning, technique)
  • Offense (positioning)
2. Have fun while working on skills by including contests, games, races, etc.
Games
1. Games will be 4 on 4 and need to start within 10 minutes of the start time for each session.
2. Games will consist of 8 - 5 minute quarters with 3 minutes for half-time. All time is running.
3. The home team (first team in the pairings) must have a parent run the clock (or supervise)
4. Games will end when the clock expires or when the session ends, whichever comes first. Coaches need to be consistent with this in order to keep all sessions on time.
5. Jump ball to start games. Alternate possessions at quarters and tie-ups.
6. Man-to-man is the only defense allowed. No zone defenses, no pressing and no traps.
7. No double-teaming the ball. Defenders can switch, but cannot double-team.
8. Defenders should remain within 4 feet of their player. Defenders should stay behind the "green line" until the offense has crossed the green line with the ball.
9. A player is allowed to steal the ball on a pass but not off the dribble. (If a team is behind in the last 5 minutes of the game, you may steal off the dribble but fouls must be called.)
10. Pushing, slapping and shooting fouls need to be called, but we will not shoot free throws. If the foul is on the defense, the offense will just throw the ball in at the point of the foul. Offensive fouls will result in a turn-over.
11. Coaches are responsible for calling fouls and violations. This must be done consistently so the kids learn and understand the rules of the game.
12. Boys and Girls teams will play on 9 foot baskets.
13. No jewelry/watches allowed on the players.
14. Equal playing time for all kids.
15. Coaches must promote good sportsmanship.
16. HAVE FUN!
